“Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” – Psalm 36:5

My mom’s medical team wheeled her stretcher past an area of a hospital where she had given birth to me years ago. As I watched, I was struck by the transitions that we were both going through. Now Mom was dying, and I was the one who had recently given birth. I wanted Mom to be around while my son grew up, but that wasn’t to be. After Mom’s passing, God faithfully provided everything I needed in her absence. God answered every prayer I prayed for encouragement, guidance, and provision. While I had been caught by surprise by the timing of Mom’s passing, God knew exactly when it would happen – and exactly what I needed for the transition.

The life transitions we go through can be quite stressful. Sometimes we have to go through significant changes, even when we would rather not. We may be upset about transitions that we don’t want (like going through a divorce or losing a job) or transitions that just trigger strong emotions for us (like moving to a new home or seeing our children leave home). Even the life transitions we celebrate (like starting a new job or becoming a parent or grandparent) are often stressful because they bring so many changes into our lives.

When we’re dealing with the stress of a life transition, we need something solid to hold onto. Psalm 36:5 points us toward what we can rely on the most: God’s faithfulness. This verse points out that God’s love and faithfulness have no limits. Just like the heavens and the skies go on and on (as far as our eyes can see), so do God’s love and faithfulness. We can always rely on God loving us completely and unconditionally. We can also rely on God to faithfully meet our needs, no matter what. There are no limits to what God will do for us, every single day – including when we’re going through a life transition.

You’re probably dealing with a lot of stressful uncertainty as you go through your current life transition. But God doesn’t want you to carry the burden of the unknown all by yourself. God wants you to remember who he is. God is the very same God who walked with you through your past transitions that turned out well. God is also the same God who will personally guide you into the positive future he has waiting for you.

Every new season of life is a new opportunity to experience God’s goodness in fresh ways. A transition doesn’t mean God has forgotten about you. It just means that God is moving you into a new chapter, where he’ll show his love to you in different ways. So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath and look back at your life so far. Remember the times God provided for you when you faced an important need, the times God comforted you when your heart was broken, and the times God guided you when you had no idea which decision to make. The same God who was perfectly faithful to you back then will be faithful to you right now, and he will continue to be faithful to you in the days ahead.

You don’t need to know exactly how everything will work out when you reach the end of your transition. All you need to do is trust the God whose love reaches to the heavens, and whose faithfulness stretches to the skies. No matter how much your life is changing right now, you’ll be safe when you rely on God!

Let’s pray ...

Dear God,
Thank you for being so reliably faithful to me in this constantly changing world. When everything around me feels stressful and uncertain, I’m grateful that your loving faithfulness never changes. Please forgive me for the times I let fear, anxiety, and doubt take over instead of trusting you and your perfect plans for me. I need the peace that only comes from you – the peace that is powerful enough for me to experience in even the most stressful circumstances. Help me to stop worrying about the changes I’m going through and where this transition will lead me. Remind me of how wonderfully faithful you have always been to me. I trust you to guide me through this transition. Please give me the strength, courage, and wisdom I need to take one single step at a time with you. Let me feel your love for me as we walk through this transition together. Thank you, God.
Amen.

Joining us this week is worship leader turned viral comedian Heather Land. After growing up in the shadow of her mother’s decades-long addiction, Heather reflects on how this painful season—alongside her unexpected shift from the worship stage to the world of comedy—taught her that while our paths may take unforeseen turns, our core calling to encourage and uplift others remains constant.

Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Rachel Kessler, an Episcopal priest and Kenyon College chaplain who completed her PhD in medieval studies at the University of Toronto before pivoting to seminary after hitting academic burnout, then built a following as the “Nerdy Priest” on TikTok after a student secretly downloaded the app on her phone.
